What is deadbeef.monster's purpose?

This website is a personal blog that is focused on my personal interests that have emotional connections for me (ie, "passion" projects or interests). I envision this place as a personal expression vehicle that has multiple communication mechanisms that are appropriate for each.

Blog

Content includes (what comes to mind anyway before typing it all out, typing this out before writing anything):

  • offensive cybersecurity tradecraft and techniques
    • pentesting, red and purple teaming, malware, etc.
  • music related to jam band stuff
    • primarily Grateful Dead, Phish, and some Goose, etc.
  • guitar playing related
    • still in my first year learning since playing as a kid
  • making art
    • total newb but do like it and sometimes get on a binge of making things
  • SNES, Angband, MUDs, and other like "retro" or text gaming
    • I love SNES grindy RPGS ("7th Saga" is perhaps my favorite), finally getting to playing Angband, played a MUD ("Achaea") for over 20 years
  • talking about movies and TV shows I like
    • love horror, scifi, and pretty much anything in space
    • love maker videos or things done by masters
    • love stargate, star trek, and other geek stuff you typically know
  • other stuff?
    • While my hobbies and interests have changed over time, I have tried to narrow down my hobbies to a few that I keep returning to

When I think of what I'm writing and planning on writing, I think of things I'd be excited to talk to you about if you were interested in talking to me about them. It would be things that have already filled my imagination non-stop and can likely talk non-stop about them, too!

BBS

I always wanted to code and run a BBS, so playing nostalgia catch up, straight up. No shame in living out dreams that opportunity or time didn't make available to you. Only get one shot in life (as far as I know anyway) so may as well be happy, right?

Unsure for its exact contents yet, as it doesn't exist yet, but thinking of blog content, games, message boards, etc... anything is possible with vaporware(tm).

Personal single point of reference on the WWW and Internet

I want this domain, deadbeef.monster, to be the single point of reference for me on the WWW and the Internet at large (ie, using BBS and other technology independent of WWW). If anyone is looking for me, the person, then only things on, or referenced from content within, deadbeef.monster are the primary sources of truth in each context.

Disclaimer: Small Web Focused? Working on it...

Getting back to the small web concept. It is what I wanted all along, since first getting on the Internet in the 1990s, after riding the waves of what the WWW brought us all. I'm not interested in pleasing the Internet at large, but more so for a small group of folks I'm connected with.

Site Technology Details

I use self-hosted WordPress as my CMS, generate to a static site via a plugin, and then put the static site content on a web server (what you're reading now). I appreciate the MarsEdit client for writing content. The WordPress theme is custom, including the design (the negative spacing, styling, layout, and font choices were intentional and purposeful).

Work is something I do, that is only a small portion of who I am. This site is aimed at communicating who I am by way of things that are important and emotionally fueled for me.
